The Wright stuff from today, and a signing.
Amid reports that Patriots' defensive end Jarvis Green will be out for a month following knee surgery performed during the bye week, the attention in the locker room today turned to a likely successor, fifth-year veteran Mike Wright, who leads the Patriots in sacks (4) and quarterback hits (6).
Before we get to the transcript of what Wright had to say today, a transaction; the Patriots signed rookie TE Rob Myers to the practice squad today and placed TE Robbie Agnone on practice squad/injured with a shoulder injury. Myers (6-4, 240) originally signed with the New York Jets as a rookie free agent out of Utah State in April 2009. He was waived by the Jets prior to the start of training camp and then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in August 2009. Myers spent two weeks on the Philadelphia practice squad after being waived by the Eagles prior to the start of the regular season.
Here's the Wright stuff:
Tough week to lose a player like Jarvis?
Yeah, it’s tough. It’s tough to lose any player on the defense. But we’re going to let Jarvis handle his business and we’re going to take care of what we can on the field.
Did you watch Miami-Jets?
We watched it many times, and I watched it at home. They’re exactly what they are. We’ll be ready for what they’ll throw at us.
Ready to do whatever is asked of you?
As always. I’m the utility guy, so wherever they want to put me, I’ll be, and I’ll be prepared.
How much have you played on the right side?
I’ve been playing a little bit more there since Seymour’s gone, and Jarvis is over there. So I’ve been backing up Jarvis a little more over there, and it’s been good. I’ve been getting a lot of reps over there in games, and it’s been helping me out a lot. I’ve been a lot more comfortable over there, but we’ll see where they put me.
Are there things you can prepare for that you haven’t seen yet?
They’re not going to be the same team they always are … they will be, but they won’t. They’re going to have something in their game plan that’s going to throw us off a little, like they always do. So we’ll be ready.
What makes the wildcat so difficult to defend?
I think it gives the running back a little more time to read the defense and see where everything is because he’s getting the ball right off the bat. Ronnie Brown will be keeping the ball a lot of times, so I think that gives him an edge.
Can he turn it into a pass play?
A little bit, but when they’re in that Wildcat, it pretty much means run. But they do have that ability to pass, so that kind of throws people off. But run is our main concern.
What's most important when lining up against it? Patience?
I think I see the Wildcat and kind of start going a little faster than they would. For me, personally, I’m just going to try to stay patient and play a little bit slower. It’s the same offense, the same kind of plays, it’s just a running back taking the ball.
You lead the team in sacks. How is that?
I don’t know. I try to take what I do in practice more to the field. Comfort level, experience … it’s all playing into it, my production. I’m just thankful it’s happening.
Changing with Jarvis out?
I don’t know, you’ll have to ask Bill that.
What’s made this team successful late in the year?
I think every team improves throughout the year, every year, throughout the league. The more you play with the guys next to you, the more you’re going to fit, and the more comfortable everybody gets out on the field. That’s the reason why.
Does Bill prepare you better than other coaches?
I don’t know. Maybe. He does do a great job of preparing us. I don’t know what they do at other teams, but we can rely on the coach having us ready.
