It's time for the sectional finals!

Mansfield's Sam Stevens.
There's probably a lot of nervous energy being felt in the town of Mansfield today, as the boys' basketball team from Mansfield High will be playing for a sectional championship tonight.

And they're probably getting a little antsy in Foxboro, too, as the girls' basketball team has its own title game on Saturday, but more on that later.

The Hornet boys, 22-3 on the season and the No. 1 seed in Division 1-South, will be playing the No. 2 Brockton Boxers (19-4) at Taunton High School's Rabouin Field House, a 7:30 p.m. start. The winner will go on to the Division 1 State Tournament, with the semifinal round to be played at the TD Garden in Boston on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

State title games will be played at the DCU Center in Worcester this year, with the D1 game likely to be the last one played on Saturday.

The Hornets and Boxers have met three prior times in tournament play -- a quarterfinal in 2016, a first-round game in 2017 and a sectional final in 2018. Mansfield has won all three.

Mansfield is led by senior Sam Stevens at 17.6 points per game and juniors Matty Boen (14.8) and T.J. Guy (13.5). Senior Andrew Rooney (4.6) is a defensive standout, and freshman Chris Hill (4.5) has been gaining in confidence throughout the season. Senior Makhi Baskin, juniors Brendan Foley, Jack Colby and Jason See and sophomore Matt Hyland provide quality contributions off the bench.

Brockton's standouts are senior guard Todd Robinson, junior forward Nayvon Reid and junior guard Diamond Blakely, and coach Bob Boen (Matty's uncle) can bring a variety of talented players off the bench.

Foxboro's Katelyn Mollica.
Foxboro's girls, the No. 2 seed in D2-South, will play No. 4 Hingham on Saturday at the Rabouin, a 11:45 start. The Warriors are 22-2 and have won 12 straight coming into the title game, while the Harborwomen are 20-3 and knocked off No. 1 Norwood in their semifinal, 62-57.

Foxboro's starting five has been intact all year -- junior guard Katelyn Mollica (18.9 ppg), who has already scored 1,169 career points; senior center Shakirah Ketant (10.4), senior forward Lizzy Davis (9.9), senior forward Yara Fawaz (6.4) and senior forward Abby Hassman (5.7). Coach Lisa Downs has used a short bench in the tournament, with junior Jordyn Collins the most reliable insertion.

No question, the player to watch for Hingham is 5-2 senior guard Grace Bennis, the school's only 1,000-point scorer in history, who can release a three and then outrun you defensively. Hingham has won nine of its last 10 games to reach the final.

Both Mansfield and Foxboro won state championships two years ago, and would love to repeat the feat two years later with significantly different lineups.

And while I don't do cable TV for them, the Norton High boys' basketball team is playing in just its second sectional final since 1989, taking on Jeremiah Burke High in the Division 3-South title game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, again at Taunton High. Best of luck to the Lancers!
