An episode from Season Three of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” |
OK, this is the end of the third week in which I have stayed basically within my house, checking my body temperature three times a day and measuring the amount of toilet paper I’ve been using. And although this straddles the border of too much information, my temperature has been steadily between 95.7 and 97.8, and I use about 24-27 squares of TP per sitting. I’m working on my second roll during the coronavirus crisis — not packages, mind you, but second roll.
I think that’s a lesson for those that have stormed the local supermarkets to lay claim to massive amounts of TP and deny the rest of us the opportunity to replenish supplies if needed. I’m not a subscriber to Sheryl Crow’s philosophy that one square per sit is all that’s necessary (in fact, I find it pretty much unbelievable), but I am certainly not one of those that felt the need to stuff my house with toilet paper.
Now, if this all sounds suspiciously similar to a Larry David rant from “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” there’s probably a reason. I’ve spent the whole day watching the series.
Ever since the sun came out around noontime, I wanted to hop in the car and drive around. But we’re not supposed to do that. They’re so mad at the world down on the Cape, they want to close the bridges and keep any and all visitors away. The Army Corps of Engineers, which maintain the bridges, has said that won’t happen — but I’m wondering if Cape First splinter groups will put snipers atop the Bourne and Sagamore in defiance.
But I digress. Since I am trying to adhere to the recommendations that we not drive unless we’re undertaking necessary trips, I decided instead to park in the living room and run “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episodes, one after another. I’m in the midst of Season Three right now, so the episodes seem a little dated (they’re 18 years old, and he’s driving a first-generation Prius), but I am laughing my ass off nonetheless.
It’s funny — I was never a fan of “Seinfeld.” I don’t think I’ve seen a single episode of that series all the way through. But Larry David’s long-running HBO series is a gem. What makes it funniest to me is the realization that most of the dialogue is improvised. A framework is established beforehand, but the characters have to take the framework and run with it. It’s comedy genius.
But I do find that spilling over to my life, confined as it is. I noticed it even as I was writing the first paragraph of this missive. It is kind of a story about nothing.
It’s funny stuff, though ...
Now, for some other thoughts gleaned in-between one episode and another:

Adelphi head coach Missy Traversi. |
Missy and I chat about what it was like to have to deal with that disappointment, and also about what the current “new reality” means for coaches trying to recruit for a new season. It will be on the podcasting platforms Monday around noon, and subscribers will have it automatically downloaded to their smartphones.
** Maybe I’ll take a ride tomorrow. One of the cars probably needs gas for the first time in a month. Don’t worry, I’m not contagious and I have masks now (thanks, Ellen!). See you all tomorrow.
